MAPS: A Program Exploring Career Pathways to Increase Employee Satisfaction and Retention Presenters: Shayna Hodges, Julia Crooks, Tanya Chotejaruchaiya, University of Maryland, College Park Session Description: The Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) at the University of Maryland is a dynamic, essential campus resource that provides transportation and parking to the University of Maryland community. They have approximately 400 staff members, composed of students, full-time and part-time staff. After review and discussion with staff about providing more professional development opportunities and improving retention, the Employee Engagement Team designed the MAPS program (Mentoring, Advising/Coaching, Professional Development and Skill Building). Participants of this program, which is open to all staff who have been with the department for at least one year, regardless of employment status or unit, are grouped and form a learning cohort. The cohort then completes a six-month training program that consists of one-on-one coaching sessions with a certified career coach, monthly training focused on various themes around personal/professional development, monthly group meetings to engage in meaningful discussion around training topics, and dedicated time to work on career growth activities. The cohort participants have varied widely in backgrounds, job titles, units, and more. The MAPS team works diligently to make nontraditional employee schedules work with the program design, careful not to exclude hopeful participants, and they also work closely with supervisors to ensure buy-in and support for participating employees. Their program is relatively new, starting in 2023, and has been well received and attended. Cohort participants form a bond and have continued to check in with one another regarding their professional development goals. The department hopes that by supporting employees' interests and aspirations, it will demonstrate a commitment to retaining and maintaining a talented and motivated workforce. Objectives:

Mentorship in Action: Lessons for a Successful Mentorship Experience Moderator: Roamy Valera, CAPP Panelists: Mike Simmons, CEO, TEZ Technology; Maggie Vercoe, Parking, Mobility, & Tech Professional; Peter Lange, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President, and Debbie Lollar, CAPP, Associate Vice President, Transportation Services, Texas A & M University, College Station Session Description: Mentorship is the vital process through which experienced individuals guide and support those less experienced in personal and professional development. It serves as a cornerstone for cultivating future leaders within organizations and can create strategic retention of valuable employees as well as be used in the rubric for succession planning. Effective mentorship fosters growth by providing guidance, feedback, and encouragement tailored to the mentee's needs and aspirations. This session engages three mentor/mentee pairings and examines how the relationships were born, how they developed, and how they have added value to both the lives and careers of both partners. We will hear from senior executives, directors, and C-Suite leaders about the power of mentorship and the impact that it has on those who have reached a pinnacle in their careers, as well as hearing from the leaders that they have mentored and how this program has benefitted the organization and has been used as a retention and succession planning tool. Paradigm-Inverting Operational Change Leadership Presenter: Perry H. Eggleston, Ramon Zavala; University of California, Davis Session Description: In 2021, UC Davis inverted the campus parking paradigm by introducing daily choice as its primary permitting system and limiting the issuance of long-term permits. At the time, this was an experiment in sustainability that removed the sunk costs of a long-term permit, allowing the parker to choose their daily fee level or not to park on campus at all. The University community overwhelmingly adopted daily choice fees, where over 90% of the campus community chose daily choice over the expense of a long-term permit. The community demanded we normalize this new system, which required inverting our operation to adjust for the unknown changes. The change process begins with the director communicating a vision to the department leadership team to collaborate on the goals and objectives for this significant change. Department leadership operationalizes the vision guided by those goals and objectives and shares the implementation plan with the broader internal team. Continual internal ideation refines the plan in preparation for external introduction. External stakeholder feedback introduces even more complexity to the change process, especially when the feedback is negative. As stakeholder concerns are addressed, leaders must remain flexible to make quick and informed adjustments. While this flexibility facilitates external adoption, it creates more internal complexities as micro-operational changes often happen very quickly. Normalization of significant operational change can take years. With the many adjustments made during the planning and implementation, leaders must remain focused on the effort's goals and objectives. That requires constant reminders to the internal team and external stakeholders when confronted with change proposals that veer too far from what must be accomplished. Maintaining focus is most important for the overall success of any change process. Objectives:

Thinking About How We Think: Becoming Stronger Leaders Through Metacognition Presenter: Mo McCanna, SHRM-CP, Modii Session Description: We often talk about what strong leaders "do" because it is tangible, or about what they "are" because we can see these characteristics in practice. Strong leaders are open minded, empathetic, transparent, accountable, adaptable and innovative, yet we may overlook the mental process it takes for someone to exemplify these qualities and that, even as adults, we can strengthen them. In this session about metacognition, we’ll learn how being aware of and regulating our thinking (and ego!) can help us develop the characteristics to become the best collaborator and leader we can be. We’ll share simple principles and valuable resources to rewire our brains from negative, threat-based and defensive responses to self-awareness, curiosity and seeing opportunity in every mistake, piece of feedback or difficult conversation. Be kinder to ourselves and others through introspection, and see culture, engagement and business outcomes improve because of it. Themes will be drawn from The Four Agreements, Crucial Conversations, and other meaningful resources and quotes. Objectives:
